ENRICHMENT SERIES

This series includes a variety of workshops designed for working interpreters looking to strengthen their interpreting skills or to meet continuing education unit requirements. The workshops in this series couple pre-workshop readings and in-class discussions of pertinent theoretical concepts of the modes of interpretation with skills practice using materials that are relevant and timely to the field of instruction. 
Workshops

In the Spotlight: Interpreting Witness Testimony - INSP 
This one-day, language neutral workshop will discuss the most important elements of interpreting witness testimony on the stand. The workshop will touch on: preparation, the parties, standard protocols, consecutive v. simultaneous, team interpreting and self-care, among other topics. This workshop offers 6 educational contact hours.

The Interpreted Interview - INT -  LN   Language Neutral Workshop  (English)  
Independent of the setting, interviews share a common goal: the elicitation and collection of information; and a common structure: a conversation based on a question-answer exchange, an interview.  With this in mind, the workshop will focus on three major concepts pertaining to an interview: preparation, protocol, and attention. The workshop will present and discuss these concepts from the interviewer, interviewee and the interpreter’s perspective so as to impart a broad context in which interpreter may perform competently. Practice and analysis will include an assortment of material of varied degrees of difficulty.

Right at First Sight!  - RFS - LN   
This is a one-day, language neutral workshop focusing on the general principles of sight translation. The workshop is devoted to general theory of sight translation and linguistic analysis of texts, followed by practice exercises. Instructors will introduce the concept of de-verbalization along with critical strategies interpreters may use to render a competent sight translation free of literal translations, mistranslations, and false cognates.

 Note-Taking 101 - NT101-LN
NT 101 is a two-day, language neutral workshop for interpreters working in community settings such as hospitals, courts, schools, and social services and immigration. Throughout the two days, instructors will present the theory of note-taking in combination with practice sessions to illustrate and reinforce the skills and concepts presented. During practice emphasis is given to both the note taking process, the retrieval of message and delivery strategies. The goal is to give the participant the necessary tools to develop a personal note-taking strategy and to further improve existing skills.

Note-Taking 102 - NT102 
NT 102 is a two-day, language neutral workshop and is a continuation of NT 101, which is a prerequisite. The goal of this session is to continue developing participant’s note-taking skills. Additional specific strategies characteristic of competent note-taking are introduced and followed by practice exercises specific to the strategy. During practice emphasis is given to both the note taking process, the retrieval of message and delivery strategies.

Accurate and Ethical Consecutive Interpretation Workshop - AECI 
The goal of the two-day, Spanish language, workshop is two fold: to reinforce positive existing strategies and to introduce new ones in order to improve performance.  Parallel to consecutive interpretation skill development, the instructors address ethics as an integral part of the interpretation process.

Accurate and Ethical Consecutive Interpretation for Medical Interpreters - AECIMed -
The two-day, Spanish Language, workshop has as objective to have participants understand and apply the mechanics of a competent consecutive interpretation; reflect and gain a better understanding of the medical interpreter's role as defined by the nationally accepted codes of ethics; and acquire the tools needed to continuously assess their performance in professional practice. Please follow established procedures to obtain proper IMIA credit.
