PROTOCOL IN THE COURTROOM
Ethics & Responsibilities Series
Protocol in the courtroom is based on conventional legal traditions. At the time court proceedings were instituted, the role of the interpreter was not considered as a contribution to these proceedings. Professional interpreters, have the responsibility to learn, understand, and adhere to this protocol and etiquette to ensure the integrity of proceedings.
With this premise in mind, we have developed this workshop in our Ethics and Responsibilities Series. The workshop will be highly interactive and it will require attendees’ full participation during guided discussions on established courtroom protocol and etiquette, their relationship to the standards of practice of professional interpreters and, ultimately, as the foundation for ethical conduct.
Scenarios will be presented in a courtroom setting for participants to react to in real time. These scenarios will address topics such as how to handle waiting time, obtaining information about the case, and mediating linguistic, technical and interpersonal issues.
Goals
- Participants will learn about courtroom protocol as applies to all officers of the court.
- Participants will explore the relationship between courtroom protocol and the standards of practice for professional interpreters.
- Participants will put into practice courtroom protocol and professional standards during the workshop.
- Participants will further reflect on how courtroom protocol delimits their role, scope of work and ethical conduct.
